Four-time champion Richard Göransson joins Volvo for 2016 campaign

Richard Göransson has signed to drive for Polestar Cyan Racing in the 2016 Scandinavian Touring Car Championship season, with the Volvo team altering its plans from two Volvo S60s to three for the upcoming year.

Göransson, a four-time STCC champion and 39-time race winner, will move across from Team Tidö and their Saab 9-3 to the Polestar Cyan factory squad, where he’ll join Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte and Robert Dahlgren, the latter returning to racing after a year helping with the development of the team’s new WTCC challenger.

“I am very proud and excited to drive for Cyan Racing,” said Göransson. “I am here to win and I know that the team only exists to win, so I could not be at a better place.

“I have the best possible conditions and it is up to me prove that I can win. I am more than ready for the season to start and there are no doubts on my goal, to become the first driver ever to take five STCC titles,” he added.

Göransson and Dahlgren effectively take the places of Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom at the team in this year’s STCC, with both Björk and Ekblom switching across to Polestar Cyan Racing’s WTCC programme for this year.

“Richard has been one of our fiercest rivals for many years and we are delighted to have him on board with us,” said Cyan Racing CEO Christian Dahl. “I have no doubt that he is going to challenge for the absolute top positions this year.”

The STCC season start is just over two months away, commencing on May 1st at the airport circuit in Skövde.
