BMR boss takes pride in championship challenge

Team BMR boss Warren Scott says he is proud of the fact that two of his drivers will go into the BTCC season finale in mathematical contention for the championship title in the first year for the Subaru programme.

Despite the well-documented issues that affected the all-new Levorg in the opening rounds of the campaign, the team has taken huge strides forwards since the introduction of a new manifold at Oulton Park, with four victories amongst 17 podiums that have followed thanks to Colin Turkington and Jason Plato.

In fact, had the season started at Oulton Park when the new parts were introduced, Turkington would hold a 14 point lead over Plato in the standings, with current championship leader Sam Tordoff 37 points back in third spot.

As it is, Turkington and Plato go into Finals Day as the rank outsiders for the crown and will need something akin to a miracle to take the title in the first year for the Levorg, although Scott said he felt it was mission accomplished that the pair even stood a chance at all.

“We always wanted to be in contention for the title when we headed to Brands Hatch and we are proud that we are,” he said, “although we would have preferred to be in contention with a chance to actually win it, as I don’t think it is realistically possible. Of course we won’t keep fighting until the end, but we know that it is highly unlikely that we’ll come away from it having taken the title.

“Saying that, I’m massively proud of all the people that have been involved in building this car and running this team as they have done an amazing job, which I knew they would. Had things gone differently then maybe we could have won the championship even with the problems we faced at the start of the year, which is a pretty epic thing to consider.

“Silverstone is a power circuit that didn’t play to our strengths but hopefully Brands Hatch will be better suited to the Levorg and even if we don’t come away from it with a title, hopefully we can end the year well.”
