Jamie Whincup on provisional Bathurst 1000 pole position

Jamie Whincup claimed a provisional pole position for the 2016 Bathurst 1000 race ahead of tomorrow’s top ten shootout. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver beat Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin by one tenth of a second.

Tim Slade claimed third position, just 0.03 seconds behind McLaughlin, in his Holden Commodore.

Prodrive Racing Australia driver Chaz Mostert, who crashed hard in last year’s Bathurst qualifying, was fourth fastest ahead of DJR Team Penske driver Fabian Coulthard.

Shane van Gisbergen was the second best Triple Eight Race Engineering driver in sixth position, just 0.066 seconds from fifth.

Reigning champion Mark Winterbottom was seventh fastest ahead of Scott Pye who rounded off the top eight for DJR Team Penske.

Garth Tander, Holden Racing Team, and Michael Caruso, Nissan Motorsport, were the last drivers to make it on to the top ten shootout tomorrow.

Notable front runners that missed out includes James Courtney in 16th and Craig Lowndes in 21st.

There were two red flags during the session, with the first for Shae Davies who spun off into the gravel trap at the chase in his Erebus Motorsport prepared Holden Commodore. The second came as Simona de Silvestro managed to do the exact same thing not long after.
