Fabian Coulthard delivers third win for DJR Team Penske

Fabian Coulthard continued the winning streak for DJR Team Penske in the non-championship race weekend in Melbourne, by winning the third race on Saturday.

The team came close to making it a 1-2 again, but with Holden’s Jamie Whincup squeezing in between the Ford duo, with race one winner Scott McLaughlin having to settle for third.

Coulthard claimed the lead from pole position while Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Whincup claimed second behind him despite contact with both McLaughlin and Prodrive Racing Australia’s Chaz Mostert at the first corner.

Mostert crossed the line in fourth position, with Walkinshaw’s James Courtney and Erebus driver David Reynolds rounding out the top six.

Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen started last following a mistake in qualifying and fought his way up to tenth position, but the Holden driver did not get to keep his position due to two separate incidents.

Van Gisbergen was given a ten-second penalty for failing to maintain one car length to the driver ahead of him at the rolling start, and a 40-second penalty for contact with Tim Blanchard on the opening lap. The penalties dropped him from tenth to 21st position.

The fourth and final race of the weekend starts tomorrow at 13:05 local time.
