WestCoast Racing eye up TCR UK programme in 2018

Front-running TCR International Series squad and five-time STCC drivers’ championship winning outfit WestCoast Racing have confirmed they’re evaluating a programme in the brand new TCR UK series for 2018.

The team were one of the first to sign up to the TCR concept, running the Honda Civic in the first two years of the International Series, before switching to the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR this season, with touring car and former Formula 1 racer Gianni Morbidelli behind the wheel in all three seasons.

The team have won 14 races, with drivers Gianni Morbidelli, Kevin Gleason, Aku Pellinen, Rob Huff and Tiago Monteiro, as well as five STCC titles in 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2010 with Fredrik Ekblom and Richard Göransson, also winning the 2016 STCC title with Göransson while running the Polestar Volvo team.

For 2018, the team, based in Sweden but with a prominent UK workforce, are looking at joining the new seven-round TCR UK series.

“We’ve had some discussions with TCR UK promoter Jonathan Ashman and I’m impressed with his plans for the new British series,” said team manager James Nixon. “We’re now looking at the viability of joining in 2018.

“We’re a winning outfit and we have the resources to make that happen in the UK. We’ll now start talks with potential drivers and hope to firm up our plans in the short to medium term.”
