Dan Cammish: “It was character building”

Dan Cammish admitted that his Rockingham weekend had been “character building” after missing out on fighting for the podium spots in the latest rounds of the BTCC season.

The Team Dynamics Honda driver was keen to try and fight towards the sharp end of the field at the Corby circuit and showed strong pace in qualifying to snare a place on the second row for the opening race despite encountering traffic on a number of laps.

Cammish’s hopes of fighting for victory in the opening race were ended on the opening lap however when he slid into the Motorbase Ford Focus of Sam Tordoff at Deene and was left instead to fight to take fifth spot with a damaged car.

A trip off track in race two whilst fighting Ollie Jackson’s Audi for position then saw him outside the points in race two before he battled back in race three to secure a tenth place finish.

It ensured the multiple Porsche champion maintained his lead in the Jack Sears Trophy standings although he conceded that things hadn’t gone to plan on track.

“I think character building is a good way to sum the weekend up for me,” he said. “It’s clear to see that we had good pace in the car on Saturday and on another day we could have had pole and then would have avoided the incident at the start of race one, which just unfortunate. The field bunched up and I made contact with Sam [Tordoff], which was completely unintentional and the last thing I wanted to do. I’ve known Sam for years and I hold my hands up to what happened.

“We carried some damage after that but managed to bring home some points in fifth place but the mixed conditions in race two didn’t favour us and I found myself on a damp part of the circuit fighting for position and it cost me. I feel I got the best I could from the car in race three and P21 to P10 was a good way to end what has been a tough meeting where we haven’t been able to pick up the results that our pace deserved.”
