Penalty recommended for Shane van Gisbergen following refueling rule breach

The Supercars championship race director Michael Masi has recommended a penalty for Shane van Gisbergen following the refueling incident in the penultimate race of 2018 at the Newcastle street circuit.

It was during van Gisbergen’s final stop that the Triple Eight Race Engineering team seemingly lowered the car before the refueling was completed.

The investigation by race director Masi concluded that the rules have been breached and that a yet to be disclosed penalty is recommended for van Gisbergen.

Triple Eight Race Engineering has not accepted the penalty and the matter has been referred to the stewards, with a decision expected for Sunday morning.

If the results from the first race of the season finale weekend remain unchanged, van Gisbergen will head title rival and DJR Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin by two points ahead of the second and last race on Sunday.
