Mikel Azcona heads first practice of Jarama season finale

Mikel Azcona put his Volcano Motorsport prepared Cupra TCR on top in the first free practice session of the TCR Europe series season finale at Jarama.

The Spaniard lapped the Spanish circuit in 1:38.884 and he was 0.334 seconds faster than Peugeot 308TCR driver Teddy Clairet.

Hyundai driver Mat’o Homola was third fastest, just five thousands of a second ahead of Mehdi Bennani, who is second in the standings, making it four different makes in the top four with his Audi RS 3 LMS.

Jimmy Clairet was fifth fastest ahead of Daniel Nagy, 0.436 and 0.484 seconds behind respectively.

Jessica Bäckman and Franco Girolami, who was fastest of the Honda drivers, rounded off the top eight, six and seven tenths of a second behind Azcona’s top time.

Points leader Mike Halder could only manage the 15th fastest time, 1.158 seconds from P1.

The session was red flagged twice, the first at 13 minutes when Enrique Hernando went off into the gravel at Turn 2. The second came just as the session was resumed again when Martin Ryba went off at Turn 5.

The second free practice session of the weekend starts at 13:10 CET.
