Volkswagen Motorsport closes its doors, TCR spare parts supply secured

Volkswagen announced today that it will cease all motorsport activities and terminate the Volkswagen Motorsport department with its 169 employees that will be absorbed into other parts of the company.

Despite this, Volkswagen has stated that spare parts supply for the Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR model has been “ensured in the long term”.

The German manufacturer announced last year that it would leave all motorsport with combustion engines, stating that “Volkswagen Motorsport’s customer sport programme will be electrified.”

Today’s decision however means that any electric motorsport plans also have been canned.

“The Volkswagen brand is on the way to becoming the leading provider of sustainable electromobility,” said Dr. Frank Welsch, a Volkswagen board member.

“To this end, we are pooling our strengths and have decided to discontinue our own motorsport activities for the Volkswagen brand.

“The deep technical expertise of the employees as well as the know-how gained from the ID.R project will remain in the company and will help us to further develop efficient models of the ID.”
