Mattias Ekström wins Super Final B and becomes “King of the Weekend”

Zengo Motorsport driver Mattias Ekström took a strong victory in the PURE ETCR Super Final B at Motorland Aragon, scoring enough points to become the “King of the Weekend” and also to become the new championship leader.

Drama ensued with ten minutes to go for the Final B, as Romeo Ferraris M1RA’s Luca Filippi was still in the pit lane with an apparent software issue. The Italian couldn’t start the race in his Alfa Romeo Giulia of Romeo Ferraris.

At the start, Hyundai Motorsport driver Jean-Karl Vernay, Ekström and his team-mate Daniel Nagy were side-by-side down the main straight, with Vernay taking the lead at the first corner.

Ekström overtook for the lead not long after, whilst Hyundai Motorsport N’s John Filippi took fourth place from Romeo Ferraris M1RA’s Oliver Webb.

The Briton, however, overtook the Frenchman again on lap two as Filippi was too late on the brakes.

Vernay dropped behind Ekström, soon falling into the clutches of Nagy. The Hungarian’s hopes were however dashed as he had to defend from Webb, who attacked the Cupra driver to overtake for third place.

At the chequered flag, Ekström took the victory three seconds ahead of Vernay, with Webb completing the podium. Nagy was fourth, with John Filippi in fifth place.

The result allowed Ekström to become the “King of the Weekend” on 77 points. The Swede also leads the overall standings with 146 points, with Vernay second, 22 points behind and Jordi Gené in third, 37 points adrift.

The next PURE ETCR round takes place at the Copenhagen Grand Prix on August 6-8.
