Mikel Azcona: “I gave him plenty of space”

Zengo Motorsport driver Mikel Azcona and Hyundai driver Augusto Farfus fought a hard battle for the lead in Sunday’s PURE ETCR Super Finale A at Motorland Aragon which ended with both colliding and the Spaniard out of the race.

“I respected him for three laps,” Azcona told TouringCarTimes. “I gave him space and, when I saw him faster than me, I respected his line.

“On lap three I saw him coming through and I gave him plenty of space,” the Spaniard continued. “But, as we came out of the corner, he opened his line and pushed me out of the track. If he would have given me five centimetres, we would have both finished the race.”

Azcona got stuck on the gravel trap and couldn’t continue, with a suspected steering issue: “When I had both wheels on the gravel the car lost grip and went out. I then couldn’t turn, so I think I have a broken steering.”

Farfus was unavailable for comment after the race, although the incident is under investigation by the stewards.
