Philipp Eng crowned King of the Weekend with lights to flag Super Final win
Philipp Eng capped off a perfect PURE ETCR weekend for Romeo Ferraris by claiming the Super Final B victory and becoming the King of the Weekend in Copenhagen.
New to the series this weekend, Eng had won his first ever Battle on Saturday before securing pole position for the Super Final in the one-lap shootout this morning.
His victory means that he finished the weekend as the top points scorer, with team-mate and Super Final A winner Luca Filippi second.
The double victory for Romeo Ferraris comes just weeks after the death of the team’s leading light in TCR racing, Aldo Cerutti – the father of team principal Michaela – with both Eng and Filippi paying tribute following their victories.
In the Super Final itself, polesitter Eng maintained his lead at the first corner despite a fast-starting Chilton trying to go around the outside of the Alfa Romeo Giulia.
Gené held his place off the start in third, with Mikel Azcona moving up to fourth as Augusto Farfus made a poor start in his Hyundai Velostar N ETCR, dropping to the rear of the field.
As Eng and Chilton disputed the top two positions, things were tight between the pair of Cupras and Gené had a slight wobble around the final sector, nearly losing the back of his Cupra X.
That allowed Azcona to close in on his compatriot and team-mate, but the order remained the same.
Eng extended his lead out at the front, thanks to back-to-back fastest laps, to more than two seconds over Chilton, while Azcona became increasingly frustrated behind Gené for third.
That battle became a scrap for third as Chilton suddenly slowed on the fifth of six laps with a puncture, elevating Gené to second and Azcona onto the bottom step of the podium.
Reinvigorated, Azcona set about trying to force Gené into a mistake on the final lap but was limited in his options due to the double waved yellows for Chilton’s stricken car.
Meanwhile, Eng claimed what eventually ended up being a comfortable victory to become King of the Weekend on his first outing in PURE ETCR.
“It’s been a great weekend, the car was extremely good and a great package. I’m just so happy for the whole team with the passing of Aldo. Great job for Luca as well who finished the weekend second. It was a lot of fun.”
Gené held onto second ahead Azcona, with Rodrigo Baptista coming home just off the podium in fourth.
Farfus was disappointed in fifth, while Hyundai’s miserable day was confirmed as Chilton failed to reach the finish.
In the overall points standings, Ekström leads the way on 210 points, 24 ahead of Vernay while Gené moves up to third on 167.
Fourth in the standings is another Cupra X Zengo Motorsport driver, Mikel Azcona on 161 points, with Baptista fifth on 149.
Thanks to his Super Final A victory, Luca Filippi is sixth in the points on 144, 66 points behind Ekström, while Farfus was made to pay for a disappointing weekend as he drops to seventh.
The next round of the PURE ETCR season takes place at the Hungaroring on the weekend of 20-22 August.
