Mikel Azcona and Augusto Farfus share Pool A Round 1 Battles victories

Cupra driver Mikel Azcona and Hyundai’s Augusto Farfus won their respective Pool A Round 1 Battles on Friday at Pau Arnos, although the Brazilian is under investigation for an incidents during his battle.

At the start of the first battle, Daniel Nagy in his Cupra e-ETCR took the lead ahead of John Filippi’s Hyundai Veloster N ETCR and fellow Cupra driver Azcona.

Nagy soon lost the lead to Filippi, who led for two laps, with Azcona overtaking Nagy on lap three for second place. The Spaniard continued moving forward, attacking and overtaking Filippi for the lead on lap four.

At the chequered flag, Azcona won the Round 1 Battle 1 ahead of Filippi and Nagy.

Oliver Webb, driving the Alfa Romeo by Ferraris, took the lead at the start Battle 2, followed by team-mate Luca Filippi. The Italian overtook the Briton for the lead on lap one, with Hyundai racer Farfus also taking advantage of the gap to climb to second place ahead of Webb.

Farfus attacked Filippi on lap two, braking hard and almost hitting the Italian. Despite going deep into the corner, the Brazilian managed to stay ahead of Webb.

Farfus continued looking for a gap on the last lap, hitting Filippi on the inside and sending the Italian into a spin. Webb got ahead but the Hyundai driver rubbed against him to retake the lead.

The Brazilian won ahead of Webb, with Filippi limping back to cross the line in third place, but Farfus remains under investigation for the incident with the Alfa driver.

The Pool B Round 1 battles are scheduled for 17:05 CEST.
