Mattias Ekström fends off Mikel Azcona to Pool Furious super final victory

Cupra EKS driver Mattias Ekström drove a hard race to fend off Hyundai Motorsport driver Mikel Azcona’s attacks and win the FIA ETCR Pool Furious super final at Pau-Ville.

Romeo Ferraris’ Giovanni Venturini could not take part in the super final due to the damage sustained to the Giulia ETCR he shares with Luca Filippi in the Pool Fast super final earlier on Sunday.

Ekström took the lead at the start of the heat ahead of Romeo Ferraris’ Bruno Spengler and Hyundai Motorsport N’s Mikel Azcona. The Spaniard then overtook Spengler on lap two for second place.

Azcona started clocking fast sectors to close the gap to leading driver Ekström, with the duo staying close to each other and opening a large gap to Spengler, who was fighting to keep Hyundai Motorsport N’s Kevin Ceccon at bay.

Ekström defended until the finishing line to take the victory ahead of Azcona, with Spengler completing the podium. Ceccon was fourth, with Cupra EKS’ Jordi Gené in fifth place.

Ekström has been crowned king of the weekend and leads the championship on 100 points, with fellow Cupra EKS drivers Adrien Tambay and Tom Blomqvist 13 and 16 points behind respectively.

The next round of the FIA ETCR takes place on May 20-22 Istanbul Park.
