Bruno Spengler and Jean-Karl Vernay win Pool Furious quarter finals
Romeo Ferraris driver Bruno Spengler and Jean-Karl Vernay of Hyundai shared victories in the Pool Furious quarter finals at the Hungaroring.
Spengler took the lead at the start of the Pool Furious quarter final 1, coming under attack from Cupra EKS driver Tom Blomqvist, who tried to overtake the Canadian on the outside at Turn 1.
Adrien Tambay sat in third, right behind the leading duo.
Tambay overtook Blomqvist for second place, with Spengler opening a small gap during the first lap.
The start of the last lap saw Tambay all over the back of Spengler coming out of Turn 1. Blomqvist was right behind and managed to make contact with team-mate Tambay, retiring on the spot.
Spengler took the Giulia ETCR to the victory ahead of Tambay.
“I’m really disappointed as we had a tenth on Bruno and power-up left,” explained Cupra EKS team principal Xavi Serra. “Our drivers are free to race each other, but have to respect each other.”
Hyundai N Motorsport drivers Vernay and Norbert Michelisz, along with Romeo Ferraris’ Luca Filippi lined up for the second quarter final.
Vernay managed to stay ahead of Filippi at the start, with Michelisz settling in third place. The local hero then overtook Filippi for second place at the end of the first lap.
Vernay had opened a small gap over Michelisz ahead of the final lap, as Filippi attacked the Hungarian at the main straight, forcing Michelisz to move and defend his position.
The Romeo Ferraris driver then got a better exit out of Turn 1, overtaking Michelisz for second place.
Vernay took the second quarter final victory, with Filippi in second place and Michelisz in third.
The ETCR returns to the track for the Pool Fast semi finals at 19:55 CEST on Saturday evening.
