Mikel Azcona delighted to be King of the Weekend at Vallelunga

Mikel Azcona was crowned FIA ETCR King of the Weekend at Vallelunga. The Hyundai driver repeated the feat from last year, when he was driving for Cupra and won the first ever event of ETCR.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very long time”, admitted the Spaniard to TouringCarTimes.

“This season I wanted to be king of the weekend again, just like I did last year at Vallelunga, and I’m very happy. It was a very difficult start of the season, we suffered a lot, so to be back here with such an incredible car feels fantastic.”

Azcona is the only ETCR driver to have tasted different ETCR machinery back-to-back at the same track, but the different conditions compared to last year make it impossible to judge the differences according to the Spaniard.

“It’s difficult to compare to last year, it’s a different car and it’s a different condition,” said Azcona.

“I can say that I love the atmosphere at Hyundai, I love this team. They’re always working so hard every day and I can feel it inside the car, the improvement is clear compared to the start of the season. We have to continue like this. It’s not easy to fight these guys, such as Bruno (Spengler), Maxime (Martin), Mattias (Ekström), but we’re the best of the weekend, and it feels sweet.”
