Aiden Moffat wins frantic reverse grid contest

Aiden Moffat produced a superlative performance in the final British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Donington Park to clinch victory ahead of four-time champions Colin Turkington and Ash Sutton.

The Scotsman marked his debut for Speedworks Motorsport and Toyota in style with a wheel-perfect drive as he overhauled Rob Huff and then fended off Turkington and Sutton in the closing stages to take his first win since 2021.

Adam Morgan utilised his fast-starting BMW to launch into the lead but soon relinquished his advantage when he locked up and ran wide following a brief safety car period.

Pole sitter Huff had no time to rest as he assumed the lead as he was soon reeled in by Moffat, who wasted no time in making a move out of Coppice and down the back straight at mid-distance. Unfortunately for Huff, he would be shuffled back down the order in the subsequent laps.

As Moffat attempted to make his escape, Turkington led the charge to catch and dragging Sutton with him, they soon closed in on the Toyota driver.

Armed with more hybrid power though, Moffat’s defence remained resolute and he defended brilliantly all the way to the chequered flag, with Turkington and Sutton occupying the remaining spots on the podium.

Tom Ingram capped off a memorable day to net fourth while Jake Hill rounded out the top five with another impressive drive in his BMW.

Further down the order, Huff and Morgan recovered to finish sixth and seventh while Dan Rowbottom, Josh Cook and Dan Cammish completed the top ten.

The next BTCC race will take place at Brands Hatch on May 11-12.
