Will Fabrizio Giovanardi secure the title?

There is only one race remaining of the British Touring Car Championship 2008. Fabrizio Giovanardi is the favorite for the title as he is heading the tables with 261 points compared to Jason Plato’s 217 points. If Plato is going to pass he need to score almost maximum points and Giovanardi none. The maximum available points are 52 points which would give plato 269 points, some eight points more than Giovanardi’s current.

If Giovanardi scores a third place, giving ten points, in any of the three races it would be enough to secure the title, no matter where Plato finishes.

According to almost all experts, Giovanardi is more than favorite for the title. 1992 champion Tim Harvey said to BTCC.net:

“Acts of God aside, nothing is going to stop Fabrizio scooping his second consecutive title. It would take an accident in the first race and non-starts in races 2 and 3 for ‘Gio’ to give Jason any chance. Fabrizio’s season has been a model example of how to win the BTCC: scoring points in all races, staying out of trouble and being aggressive only when necessary has built him an unassailable lead, even though he’s won fewer races than Jason.

Colin will probably win the Indie title as he is the most consistent of the three contenders, but Mat will win if it’s wet! Adam is unlikely to win as Brands favours the BMWs.”
