Weight reduction for sequential gearbox
According to reports received by TouringCarTimes, the British Touring Car Championship organisers will introduce a weight reduction for rear wheel driven cars using sequential gearbox for the 2009 season. Currently cars using such transmission configuration get a 30 kilo weight penalty. The new weight reduction will reduce the penalty to 10 kilos, knocking 20 kilos off.
The supposed weight reduction is reported to have caused quite a stir among the teams. The only car being able to take advantage from the change is the BMW.
Last year Motorbase were alone to run their cars with a sequential gearbox. The two other BMW-teams, Team RAC and BMW Dealer Team UK, ran their cars with H-gearboxes.
It remains to be seen if the other BMW teams follow Motorbase if the weight reduction is introduced. A sequential gearbox costs around 10 000 €, quite an investment to get 20 kilos off the car.
