Turkington want points haul at Knockhill
Colin Turkington is heading to Knockhill in a positive frame of mind, with the sole aim of bolstering his championship advantage. The Northern Irishman saw his advantage in the drivers championship cut by Fabrizio Giovanardi at Snetterton, and will be looking to strike back this weekend.
“I’m certainly not feeling under pressure that I have to win at Knockhill” Turkington told btcc.net, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be trying to win as the BTCC heads to the Fife circuit.
Turkington added “I’ll still be going for wins, of course”, which he followed up by saying that it “would be great timing if I could get what would be my first win there [at Knockhill]”.
Championships are won by consistency, and there is no greater example than that of the 2008 season. Fabrizio Giovanardi secured his second BTCC title by consistently finishing races, and taking any points he could, without taking big risks.
Turkington fully understands this approach, saying that the key to the championship this year is “to keep scoring and to keep scoring well”.
Knockhill has generally not favoured the rear-wheel driven BMW 320si, and Team RAC have worked extensively on developing the car. Turkington is pleased with the advances that the team has made, stating that “the BMW seems suited to almost any kind of track”.
Turkington currently has 182 points, and enjoys a 17 point advantage at the top of the standings. His closet rival is Giovanardi who has 165 points, with Matt Neal and Jason Plato on 136 and 126 points respectively.
“There’s still quite a few of us involved”, said Turkington, despite claims by Plato that the championship is out of reach after happenings at Snetterton. Turkington believes that any of the four drivers could take the title this year, especially in the British Touring Car Championship.
