Colin Turkington’s WSR team have picked up praise from Jonathan Palmer and BTCC Series Director Alan Gow. MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Palmer had particular reason to congratulate WSR, having driven for the team in British Formula 3 back in 1981.
“WSR is a very special team to me”, said Palmer speaking to the official series website, “As I won the British F3 Championship with it in 1981. My win in British F3 was the start of the team and its success today is a great tribute to team principal Dick Bennetts.”
“I’m absolutely delighted that Colin has won the championship,” added Palmer, who competed in the BTCC in 1991. “His drive was quite superb under heavy pressure. Of course he couldn’t have done it without a great team and a great car and I am thrilled to see WSR take the Drivers’ title.”
The MSV boss had further reason to celebrate on Sunday, having seen a record 35,000 spectators pour through the gates of the Kent circuit, the biggest crowd to watch a BTCC event at Brands Hatch since MotorSport Vision took over the venue in 2004.
“I’d like to congratulate BTCC Series Director Alan Gow and Dennis Carter at the BARC for evolving the championship into such an outstanding package of entertainment for the fans. It was fantastic to see so many spectators at Brands Hatch – the circuit really was heaving!”
The subject of Palmer’s praise, Alan Gow, also paid tribute to the new BTCC champion and his team via the official website.
“My sincere congratulations go out to Colin, his family and his loyal army of supporters. He richly deserves his crown and is an immensely popular Champion – not only with the fans but also within the BTCC fraternity. I am absolutely delighted to see him crowned Champion. He’s not only a hugely popular driver with tremendous support among the fans but also a terrific role model.
“The manner in which he goes about his motor sport has always been very impressive, and even more so this year. This has been without doubt one of the most competitive BTCC seasons on record, so to handle the immense pressure he has been put under – from some of the best teams, drivers and cars we have ever seen in the championship – is a real mark of his ability.
“Likewise to Dick Bennetts and the WSR team that has run the Team RAC BMWs. Dick has been trying to win the BTCC outright for more than a decade and to do it as a privateer against such fantastic competitors speaks volumes for WSR’s levels of professionalism and attention to detail.”
