Onslow-Cole secures third Team Aon win of the day
Tom Onslow-Cole soared into second in the standings with a win in the final race at Silverstone, to close within 14 points of Jason Plato.
Paul O’Neill led from pole, with championship rivals Matt Neal and Jason Plato right behind him. On the race start, O’Neill got away well and held the position, whilst behind him there was trouble, as Neal made contact with Plato through Copse, spinning the Chevrolet to the back of the pack, whilst falling to seventh position.
Whilst on the start line, a poor start for MacDowall saw the Chevrolet Cruze smashed into by the Forster Motorsport BMW of Martin Depper, bringing out the safety car.
The safety car came out to pick-up O’Neill, who was now followed by both of the Team Aon Ford Focuses.
At the restart, O’Neill fought hard to keep the Focus of Onslow-Cole behind, but on lap 9 Onslow-Cole slipped past the Tech-Speed Honda Integra, and O’Neill had to focus on defending from Chilton.
Matt Neal worked his way back up the order to eventually finish fourth.
On lap 12, the battle between Steven Kane, Andrew Jordan and Rob Collard for seventh ended in disaster, with Jordan tapped into a spin by Kane, and speared into the WSR BMW of Collard. Collard rejoined and went on to finish twelfth; Kane dropped a place initially after the incident, but reclaimed it a lap later from the Vauxhall of James Nash.
Andrew Jordan’s race was over however, was stuck in the gravel at Becketts.
Special Tuning UK had a unlucky race, with Tom Boardman not getting away on the parade lap and having to start from the pitlane. Things seemed to be going well for Phil Glew in the NGTC powered Leon, running in the points in ninth, but was served a drive through penalty and as a result dropped to 13th, allowing Jason Plato into ninth to recover two points from the race.
On lap 19, Mat Jackson tackled the Team Aon Ford of Tom Chilton who had fallen back from Paul O’Neill, and turned the Focus sideways. This moved Jackson into third and allowed both of the Honda Racing Team cars through.
After a strong weekend, where Tom Onslow-Cole was in a position to take all three victories, the young driver finds himself second in the championship just 14 points behind Jason Plato, with the Honda of Matt Neal nine points further back.
