Airwaves BMW not giving up on indie title
Airwaves BMW lost it’s lead in both of the independents’ championships at Silverstone, but the team vows to “keep fighting”, and hopes to recover at Knockhill.
The team’s drivers were caught up in the action throughout race day, with Kane and Jackson battling hard for the most part with the two Hondas, but with indie rival Team Aon’s hat-trick of victories, the team slipped to second in both the drivers and teams championships.
Team Principal David Bartrum was philosophical about the weekend’s events:
“There’s a lot of things going on in the paddock,” said Bartrum to TouringCarTimes.
“Things are changing with the transition from different rules, and sometimes championships have to go through this sort of thing to get to where they want to go, but British Touring cars is quite strong, it has a way of equalling things out.”
“Obviously we lost our championship lead today to Aon. We’re a small team, they’re very much a works ‘looking’ team – but we’ll just keep fighting.”
Mat Jackson recovered from a troubled qualifying session to take a podium in race three, at the expense of independent rival Tom Chilton; which helped him keep third place in the independent drivers’ trophy, whilst Steven Kane took points from all of the races.
Airwaves BMW are heading up to Knockhill on September 5th for the next round of the championship, where they hope to fare better.
“We’re going to Knockhill with a very positive attitude,” said Bartrum.
“It’s more of a BMW circuit…it’s a very short lap, very up hill down dale, and we’ve just got to go up there and get some results and get back our championship position.”
