Wrathall happy to be mixing it with the front
Frank Wrathall was ‘over the moon’ with the new found performance from his Dynojet Racing Toyota Avensis at the weekend, bagging his first championship points and a class win in the first race, and battling with reigning champion Jason Plato in the second.
Wrathall picked up the first championship points for a Next Generation Touring Car in the race, with Rob Austin also scoring points in races two and three.
“I was a bit speechless really,” said Wrathall to TouringCarTimes. “I knew looking at my qualifying lap I had more pace and that the car would be there or thereabouts but to actually come home in fourth place and be top independent, incredible. Absolutely over the moon.”
In race two, Wrathall overtook Jason Plato on the first lap to move up to third behind Gordon Shedden and James Nash, and fended off the Chevrolet driver before an overheating problem caused the 24-year-old to retire on lap ten, and ultimately miss the final race of the day.
“We were lying third for the majority before I picked up a problem…I knew that it was coming for a few laps, but to be able to hold off Plato for a few laps with a problem was also quite a good feeling really. But I knew there were too many laps left and I was running out of time…I think we’ve more than shown the potential of the car and we’ve done the team justice.”
“I’m not upset one bit because it’s just been a brilliant weekend,” added Wrathall.
“It’s exactly where I want to be mixing it with the people at the front with the best drivers in the best cars, I can’t ask for anymore. We’re exactly where we want to be. There’s still a lot of work to be done on this car and on this project but we’re up for it and relishing the challenge.”
