Delighted Turkington says win feels “mega”
Colin Turkington says his “mega” win in the final race at Donington Park was reward for his West Surrey Racing team’s hard work over the winter.
The 2009 champion took the first win for the team’s new BMW 125i, built to the Next Generation Touring Car regulations, after finishing eighth and ninth in the first two races.
It means he leaves Leicestershire in seventh place in the overall standings, and third in the independents’ table.
Speaking to TouringCarTimes, Turkington said: “It feels mega. It is a big reward for the whole team for the work that’s been put in over this past six months.
“We have been working very hard to get the car where we wanted, and race three it just happened for us. We had a really good balance, and I got my head down and hit the road.
“That is the way some races go. I got away and the other guys were fighting. I had a clear track and was able to concentrate to pull quite a margin on each lap. The race just fell for me really.”
As well as the first win for the new car, it was also Turkington’s first win since returning to the championship, after three seasons away.
He said: “It feels really good to be on the top step again. You keep thinking ‘when’s it going to happen?’ but it’s nice that it happened on the second race meeting, and hopefully it’s a springboard for the rest of the year.
“We have learned a lot, especially today. Things change again at Thruxton, it’s a different tyre, but we can cope with that.”
