Colin Turkington targeting strong points haul on Sunday
West Surrey Racing’s Colin Turkington hopes to boost his championship challenge on Sunday at Knockhill after securing second on the grid behind Rob Austin for the first race.
The 2009 champion was five-hundredths of a second down on Austin’s time after the end of the 30 minute qualifying session, and hopes for a strong set of results on Sunday, though admits the BMW didn’t have the pace to get Austin’s Audi in qualifying.
“That’s as mich as we had, I kept doing the same time but I just couldn’t find the extra tenth that was needed,” he said to TouringCarTimes.
“I’m really pleased to be second, we didn’t really look that great all day. The car felt really good but we just hadn’t put any fresh rubber on it, so once we did the car came alive, so I’m happy to be at the sharp end and hopefully can stay out of trouble.”
The BMW driver will start ahead of title rivals Gordon Shedden, Matt Neal, Jason Plato & Andrew Jordan for the first race, and hopes to make a good start and to close down the 37 point gap to points leader Matt Neal at Knockhill.
“It’s not going to be easy, it never is, but hopefully I can get off the line well and just have three good finishes, that’s the aim. I’m not interested in winning at all costs, I just want a good haul of points. Knockhill’s a tight twisty track so it’s easier to stay out of trouble if you’re up the front.”
