Dave Newsham fastest in second Silverstone practice

Speedworks Motorsport’s Dave Newsham led a Toyota one-two in second practice at Silverstone, ahead of Avensis stable-mate Frank Wrathall.

Newsham set the fastest time of 58.694 with 16 minutes to go, which was good enough to keep him at the top despite being slightly slower than the time he set this morning.

It was a Toyota 1-2-3 going into the final minutes, with Newsham leading Wrathall and Ciceley Racing’s Adam Morgan, before Sam Tordoff jumped up to third in the Triple Eight MG on his last run.

Morgan finished ahead of Tordoff’s team-mate Plato, while Warren Scott was a brilliant sixth in his Tony Gilham Racing Volkswagen CC, by far and away his best showing of the season.

Honda Racing Team’s Matt Neal was impressive in seventh, driving with a broken finger, while Howard Fuller and Jack Goff made it three Tony Gilham Racing cars in the top nine. Dan Welch rounded out the top 10 in his Proton Persona.

Championship leader Andrew Jordan finished down in 14th in his Eurotech Racing Honda Civic, while Lea Wood was again narrowly ahead of Liam Griffin in the Jack Sears Trophy, his JWT Performance Vauxhall Vectra finishing 23rd overall.

The session again saw an extensive list of drivers warned for exceeding track limits, with Andrew Jordan, Jeff Smith, Gordon Shedden, Liam Griffin, Aidan Moffat, Dan Welch, Nick Foster, Lea Wood and Adam Morgan all receiving the black and white flag.

Qualifying for the first of tomorrow’s three races takes place at 15:40 BST.
