Gordon Shedden wins red-flagged second race at Thruxton

Honda Racing Team’s Gordon Shedden took victory in the second Thruxton race, which was cut short with three laps to go after a huge crash for West Surrey Racing’s Nick Foster.

Shedden took the lead from polesitter Andrew Jordan with a hugely committed move around the outside into the final chicane on lap 11, after monstering his Civic Tourer through Church corner.

But the red flags flew on lap 14 of 16 when Rob Austin made contact with Foster’s BMW 125i on the entry to Church, pitching his car into a wild spin, which saw it fly head on over the top of the tyre barrier.

Thankfully, Foster was able to get out of the car and was seen walking away from the scene of the accident.

Foster’s team-mate Rob Collard had a happier encounter, coming home third ahead of Shedden’s team-mate Matt Neal, with Mat Jackson continuing his strong weekend for Motorbase Performance in fifth.

Jackson had been in front of Neal until a great battle ensued between the pair. They were side-by-side all the way from the exit of the complex to Goodwood, where Neal eventually made the move stick.

Colin Turkington again made forward progress to take sixth, with Jason Plato, Adam Morgan, Jack Goff and Fabrizio Giovanardi completing the top 10. The reverse grid draw put Giovanardi on pole position for the final race of the day.

Jordan had led away from pole ahead of the fast-starting Collard, with Shedden attempting a pass on Jordan at the first chicane, but outbraking himself.

Shedden passed Collard up Woodham Hill on lap three, before quickly closing on Jordan. The 2013 champion was stout in his defence, before the Scot eventually made his move stick.

Further down the field, Warren Scott and Dan Welch made contact at the final chicane on lap five, with the Team BMR man retiring in the pits a lap later.

It was also a bad race for Scott’s team-mate Alain Menu, who was given a drive-through penalty on lap two for starting out of position, and came home 20th.
