“It’s all down to tyre management” say Dunlop

Dunlop Motorsport’s Mickey Butler says tyre management for BTCC drivers is no more of an issue than last year, as the soft compound tyre being used this season is the same as it was in 2014.

Both opening races have seen a pronounced drop-off in the performance of the softer compound, particularly on the West Surrey Racing BMWs of Andy Priaulx and Rob Collard.

But Butler pointed out that Triple Eight Racing’s Jack Goff successfully managed the same tyre to fourth place in race one, and ultimately it is down to the drivers to work with what they have got.

Speaking to TouringCarTimes, Butler said: “Race one we saw if you push too hard at the beginning, there is a bigger degradation. Jack Goff was on the soft tyre in a front-wheel drive car but controlled and managed his pace, and got a fourth overall.

“It’s the same tyre as last year. You’ve got to remember, the track is very green and abrasive, but if you manage the situation and realise what is under you, you’ll be fine. And remember, it’s also the first day back at school!”

Speaking about the issues facing the West Surrey Racing drivers, Butler added: “Andy just drove very fast at the beginning and pushed too hard. He was setting purple sectors within the first few laps.

“Rob in race two had 75kg on the soft tyre at the hottest part of the day – it was only going to go one way for him. But it’s the same for everybody – it just makes it a bit more spicy.”
