Colin Turkington happy despite difficult qualifying

Colin Turkington was happy with the feel of his car around Knockhill, despite only being able to take ninth on the grid in his Volkswagen CC.

The reigning champion was the best of the Team BMR cars, with his team-mates having to settle for 14th, 16th and 22nd respectively.

“We thought it could be more difficult here just with the bigger car and the longer wheelbase but my balance was actually pretty good in qualifying so the car’s working well,” Turkington told TouringCarTimes. “Obviously carrying a bit of weight makes it tougher, definitely made the most of what I have.”

Turkington currently sits 14 points behind championship leader, and team-mate, Jason Plato, in second place, meaning he carries the second heaviest car in race one. Despite this, Turkington still feels he has the potential to get a good handful of points in tomorrow’s three races.

“I’m not going to give up yet,” he said. “We’ll see how the race goes but my car fundamentally is quite good, there’s potential to do something. We don’t have BMW or Honda pace, but I still think we can score well tomorrow.”

With the grid for race two being set by the fastest lap times in race one, Turkington is well aware that it’s going to be incredibly tough to fight for positions around the tight and twisty Knockhill circuit without compromising his lap times for the grid in race two.

“It’s going to be important to manage the times tomorrow,” said Turkington. “We need to make sure we can get a good position for race two because it’s not going to be easy to pass, it’s notoriously difficult to pass here, so that’s definitely part of the gameplan.”
