Mat Jackson on pole for second race at Silverstone

Mat Jackson will start race two at Silverstone from pole position after smashing the race lap record in a dominant race one win.

The Motorbase Performance driver stormed away at the head of the field, posting a time of 58.464 seconds, while on the soft tyre, on the third lap of 22 around the 1.64-mile circuit.

Strategy played its part for the front end of the grid, with Jack Goff and Andy Priaulx both opting for trips down the pitlane to gain track position, resulting in the pair scoring second and third respectively for the race two grid. Goff was running the softer tyre, whereas Priaulx was on the medium compound rubber.

Aron Smith, who finished sixth, took the fourth fastest time, while second placed finisher Andrew Jordan rounded out the top five.

Joining Jordan on the sixth row will be championship leader Gordon Shedden, whose lead in the standings has grown to 21 points after his title rivals struggled in the opening race.

An impressive lap from James Cole, team-mate to Mat Jackson, sees the second Ford Focus start from seventh on the grid, joined by Rob Collard’s West Surrey Racing BMW 125i. Sam Tordoff, who struggled with the soft tyres in the late stages of the race, set the ninth fastest time, with Matt Neal rounding out the top ten.

Jason Plato, who suffered a puncture on the final lap, managed to limp his way across the line to qualify for 11th on the grid, rather than be classed as a non finisher and start from the back in race two.
