Luke Davenport “desperate to crack on” with recovery

Luke Davenport says he is ‘desperate to crack on with physio’ as he continues to recover from the injuries he sustained in his accident during qualifying for the fifth round of the BTCC at Croft.

The Motorbase Performance driver sustained multiple injuries in the accident – including a broken right leg, broken arm, broken pelvis and lung damage – and was placed in an induced coma at the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough before undergoing surgery.

Having been woken from his coma last week, Davenport has now started work with a physiotherapist as he sets out on the long journey back to full fitness.

Speaking publically for the first time since the accident on Tin Top Tuesday, the 24-year-old admitted he was gradually improving and had been given a huge boost by the support that has been shown by both fellow drivers and fans since the accident occurred.

“All the tubes have been taken out now and in the last few days, I’ve started eating proper food again,” he said. “I have got straight back into the habit and that has given me a real boost mentally.

“Physically I still get tired quickly but I am starting physio now. They’ve already had me sitting off the end of the bed and that has all gone really well as I can bend both knees. Now I’m just desperate to start cracking on with physio really.

“The support has been unbelievable and I could spend all day on my going through all the messages. The support has been huge and I keep having soppy moments but I think that must just be the drugs I am on!

“The resources we have in touring cars is so strong when an accident like this happens and if you think about what happened and the intricacies that were involved in helping three badly injured drivers rather than one, then hats off to them.”

Jeff Smith and Aron Taylor-Smith continue to recover from their injuries, with Taylor-Smith also appearing on the show to update fans on his condition.

“I’m boring to be around at the moment and it’s a bit mundane sitting around doing nothing,” the MG driver said. “But in another ten days I think I’ll be moving around a bit more. I’ve taken a few steps without crutches although I resemble Bambi at the moment, but it’ll be okay.

“I have little recollection of Saturday and what happened as I was knocked out, and when I came around, I had no idea what day it was or where I was. Luke and Jeff were more conscious which was worse for them, but the important thing now is that they are on the mend.

“My recovery is going well and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.”

Interviews with both drivers are available on the full replay of the show.
