Jack Goff: “What they do with the Subaru will be interesting”

Jack Goff admitted he was surprised by the pace of the Subaru Levorgs after missing out on his second pole of the year in BTCC qualifying at Rockingham.

Goff looked well placed to take a second pole in three races as he topped the times going into the final stages of the half hour session before a quick lap from James Cole saw him edge ahead by less than a tenth of a second.

It left Goff as the top front-wheel drive runner in P2, but with the ballast-heavy Subaru of Ash Sutton directly behind on the grid, the Eurotech driver expressed concern about the pace of the BMR-run cars.

“No-one remembers who qualified in P2, they only remember the driver who qualified on pole,” he said. “It’s good that we were best of the rest but the Subaru was in a league of it’s own at a circuit where front-wheel drive cars have traditionally been quick on a Saturday.

“All credit to James for putting it on pole, but if you were to take the weight out of Ash’s car in P4, he’d have been three or fourth tenths of a second up the road. I’m interested to see how they police it.

“The set-up we had to run on the car meant it was quite unpredictable, but it was what we had to do to compete and to try and get to the front.

“Tomorrow is going to be tough and the target has to be to be quickest front-wheel drive car and see where we end up.”
