Dan Cammish “heartbroken” by missed pole

Dan Cammish admitted he felt ‘heartbroken’ after missing out on what would have been a dream pole position for his BTCC debut at Brands Hatch.

The two-time Porsche Carrera Cup champion had been on the pace throughout free practice at the wheel of his new Honda Civic Type-R and was well placed to put the FK8 version of the car onto pole for its first race when he became the first driver to break the 48s barrier.

However, things went wrong for the 28-year-old when he was the stripped of his times for missing a red light in the pits, which left him at the back of the grid with time running out in which to try and fight his way back up the order.

Although he would manage to post the fourth quickest time, Cammish was left to wonder what might have been and admitted he was frustrated at missing out on a maiden pole.

“I feel heartbroken if I’m being honest,” he said. “They were some of the best laps I’ve ever done and to have delivered like was pretty special. But now I feel like I’ve been robbed.

“There was a lot of radio chatter in my ear and I was passed the light before I had chance to stop. Maybe I should have stopped so they could push me back up the pit lane but it was done.

“The team deserved that pole position and I feel I did too. Fourth is still a good place to be though and if I wasn’t motivated before, then I certainly am now.”

Despite the disappointment of missing pole however, Cammish insisted he was pleased with the way in which he had performed on track.

“I always knew I’d be in the mix, because I’ve worked hard and think I have shown what I can do,” he said. “I almost rewrote the record books in qualifying and I’m well up for the races. I’m more than ready to take the fight to the other guys.”
