Alex Hui takes the race and secures the title with Guangdong Race 2 win

Teamwork Motorsport’s Alex Hui won the second race of the day at the TCR China Touring Car Championship season finale at the Guangdong International Circuit, and secures the 2018 drivers’ title for himself and co-driver Sunny Wong.

The Hong Kong-based driver led from the start in his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, fighting of a mid-race charge from Li Shi Cheng’s Leo Racing Volkswagen, which had fought its way back through the order after bogging down at the start from the outside of the front row.

Hui led comfortable into Turn 1 as a result ahead of Li Xue Feng’s HE Racing Volkswagen and the car of Mai Yi Boi.

Li Shi Cheng had already recovered to third by the end of the first lap, but took two laps to pass the car of Li Xue Feng, executing the move at the final hairpin, while Xia Yi Li in the Race 1-winning Alfa Romeo of Freely Racing moved up to fourth at the same time.

Li Shi Cheng then caught Hui’s Volkswagen over the next two laps, closing the three second gap to just seven-tenths of a second, but Li had worked his tyres too hard and his challenge faded over the final laps, dropping back to five seconds behind Hui, who only upped his pace when Li started to close.

Hui’s win moves Hui and co-driver Sunny Wong 12 points clear of the absent MacPro Racing pair of Henry Ho and Eurico de Jesus in the drivers’ championship, meaning the pair are now confirmed as the 2018 drivers’ champions with one race remaining.

The final race is the one-hour endurance race, which begins at 16:15 CST (09:15 CET).
