Dan Cammish: “We’re probably racing for third”
Dan Cammish says he feels that third place could be the best result possible in the opening BTCC race of the weekend after qualifying on the second row of the grid at Oulton Park.
The Honda driver showed strong pace through both practice sessions in Cheshire, setting the quickest time in FP2, but would end up third fastest in qualifying after being unable to match the pace of Colin Turkington and Sam Tordoff ahead.
Admitting that he couldn’t have gone much quicker in the session, Cammish said he was expecting to see the fight for victory to be between Turkington and team-mate Andrew Jordan and that he would be “over the moon” if he was able to fight for a podium finish.
“I was surprised to pace FP2 with the lap I did, but I think there were quite a few people who didn’t show their hand,” he said. “With that in mind, I’m happy to be P3 on the grid as it takes a lot of hard work and graft in this field.
“I think I got almost everything I could from the car and whilst there was maybe a tenth of a second in it, I don’t think we could have got onto the front row.
“We’re in a decent position but the issue is that Colin has got pole with weight onboard, and Andrew [Jordan] is in P4 despite having weight on his car and you would expect both of them to be strong at the start.
“Sam might be able to defy physics and hold on to his position, and if he does then I hope he has a real go at Colin as they are having it all their own way at the moment.
“However, the BMWs could well be 1-2 going into Old Hall and then run away and hide, so if we can get onto the podium I’d be over the moon. I’ll certainly be giving it my best.”
