José Manuel Sapag joins Target Competition for TCR Europe and WTCR outings

José Manuel Sapag is going to join Target Competition for the final three TCR Europe series races and two potential World Touring Car Cup outings.

The Argentinian, who is racing a privately entered Citroën for FDC Motorsport in the 2020 Super TC2000 season, is going to drive a Hyundai i30 N TCR for the team and was previously set to drive full TCR Europe season until the pandemic hit.

“Manu was meant to compete whole season TCR Europe of the 2020 season, but the pandemic situation made it impossible to travel for him,” said Andreas Gummerer, team manager of Target Competition, to TouringCarTimes.

“We already did some test days in February and March [and] he showed very good speed. We are happy to come to an agreement for the remaining TCR Europe and rounds and, if possible, guest starts in the FIA WTCR.”

Sapag’s first race will be TCR Europe at Barcelona on October 10-11, followed by the remaining two races at Spa-Francorchamps and Jamara.

The 25-year-old could then be set to join the WTCR races at the Hungaroring and the Adria season finale as a wild card.

“I’m very happy for this opportunity, I’ve done a lot of sim racing training to get a better feeling of the tracks, apart from Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps where I’ve already raced,” said Sapag to TouringCarTimes.

Sapag is keen to get a full-time drive in TCR Europe for 2021.

“We managed to reach an agreement with Target Competition to run five events after our season in TCR Europe was affected due to the pandemic,” said Sapag.

“If world gets better I’ll look for racing the whole 2021 season in TCR Europe.”

Sapag made a one-off appearance in the 2018 TCR Europe races at Monza behind the wheel of a Cupra TCR for Baporo Motorsport, finishing eleventh in the second race.
