Colin Turkington: ‘There’s still a long way to go’

Colin Turkington insists that there is still a long way to go in the fight to secure the 2023 BTCC title despite losing further ground to Ash Sutton at Thruxton.

Turkington managed a best finish of fourth across the three races in Hampshire at the wheel of his WSR-run BMW to slip 41 points behind Sutton, who scored a double win for the third successive meeting.

That double win means Sutton’s Motorbase team has now won nine of the twelve races run in 2023, but Turkington was keen to stress that he wasn’t giving up on what would be a record-breaking fifth title.

“Sixth, sixth and fourth was good points for me on a weekend when we didn’t have the outright pace,” he said. “It’s tough to go forwards at Thruxton, and a lot easier to go backwards, but it’s the same for everyone.

“Ash has some good points in the bag at this stage, but you can never run away with this championship, and weekends like this are crucial to score as many points as possible with the title in mind.

“You have to remember that there is a lot of racing still to come and we haven’t reached the half-way stage of the season yet. We’ve had a solid start and whilst we have to find more speed, we’re doing all we can.”
