Tom Ingram feeling ‘very Colin Turkington’ with 2023 approach
Tom Ingram has compared his 2023 BTCC season to multiple champion Colin Turkington after the campaign his the half-way stage at Oulton Park.
The defending champion sits second in the standings behind Ash Sutton despite scoring just one win at the wheel of his Bristol Street Motors-backed Hyundai compared to the six picked up by his NAPA Racing rival.
Ingram however has been more consistent in his results, having only finished outside the top four on four occasions with a 100 per cent scoring record, whilst Sutton had logged two no scores.
That approach so far has been similar to 2018, where Turkington secured the championship title with a single race win, whilst the most victories went to Sutton back in fourth spot.
“We’ve had a very ‘Colin Turkington’ season so far where we have been bagging the points in every race,” he said.
“It’s not always the most exciting way to go racing, but we’ve always been there or thereabouts towards the front and consistently scoring well, which is what you need to do in a series like this.”
The Oulton Park weekend would see Ingram bounce back from only qualifying in sixth spot to secure a brace of podium finishes, with fourth place in race three – where Sutton retired – allowing him to close the gap at the front having finished just behind his rival in the earlier two races.
“Oulton Park was a bit beige, a bit magnolia – it certainly wasn’t the most exciting weekend of the season,” he said.
“We didn’t get the tyres switched on for whatever reason in Q2 which left us in sixth place on the grid, which was far from ideal at a circuit where overtaking is so difficult.
“To come away with two third places and fourth is a decent haul of points considering where we qualified, and also with Ash not winning all the races!
“What we have to do now is make sure that when we go racing again after the summer break, we remain consistent and keep picking up the points so we’re in the mix when we get to the end.”
