Mikel Azcona hails team after victory in “most difficult race of the season”

Mikel Azcona came from third on the grid to claim his first TCR World Tour victory in the first race of the weekend at La Pedrera, a race held in difficult conditions.

“My first victory of the season, first victory of the TCR World Tour, it feels amazing to win here in these challenging conditions in Argentina,” said Azcona.

“We had slicks at the front and wets at the rear. At the beginning it was full wet, at the end the track was getting better and better, we finished with a full dry track. The conditions were the most difficult race of the season so far.”

The Spanish Hyundai was involved in a tough fight for the lead with Yann Ehrlacher, Rob Huff, Néstor Girolami and his team-mate Norbert Michelisz, with the pair even making contact at one point.

“It was key to overtake Yann (Ehrlacher) and I had to be careful with Rob (Huff) because he was very defensive,” said Azcona.

“I’m very happy, thanks to the Hyundai Motorsport team and BRC, starting from P3 and finishing with a victory is the best feeling that you can have.”

Azcona is third in the standings, 23 points from leading driver Ehrlacher.
