Mikel Azcona comfortable with the car ahead of “unpredictable” qualifying

The main talking point in Vallelunga is the true potential of the competitors, as most drivers and teams appeared to hide their real potential from the others.

Mikel Azcona was fastest in the second free practice session at the wheel of his Hyundai, but he is aware that tomorrow will be a different story.

“I’m happy to be leading FP2 but it’s difficult to judge the potential of our rivals”, admitted the Spaniard to TouringCarTimes.

“Until Q2 we will probably not see the true level of the others. The car feels good though, I’m comfortable with the balance and I’m happy with the result of the changes we made to the car. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s qualifying.”

Besides the potential sandbagging of his rivals, Azcona also thinks the colder temperatures expected for tomorrow morning’s qualifying will change the behaviour of the cars.

“I think it’s difficult to predict [tomorrow’s results] because the track will also be very different,” he said.

“We expect colder temperatures, and the colder the track the faster it gets, so honestly we will only see the true values after Q2. Lap times can change a lot from free practice, so I can’t really predict.”

Qualifying is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:20 local time.
