Tom Ingram holds off Ash Sutton to double up at Silverstone
Tom Ingram held off a charging Ash Sutton to claim his second British Touring Car Championship win of the weekend at Silverstone and with it, close the deficit to Jake Hill to just two points.
Heavy rain battered the circuit prior to the cars leaving the pit lane and with just nine laps completed, the red flag was waved with conditions deemed impossible to drive in.
After a lengthy delay, track action initially resumed behind the safety car and when thy finally got up to full speed, Ingram held firm out front to triumph ahead of reigning champion Sutton and Josh Cook.
Ingram had started third but wasted no time in working his way up to the lead as he powered around the outside of front row starters Chris Smiley and Dan Cammish as the lights went out.
Sutton was the biggest mover as he charged up to second from 12th within a matter of laps and then began to mount pressure on the Hyundai driver. Come the final corner of the last lap, the Ford drive lunged down the inside Ingram but despite contact being made, he was unable to find a way past.
Cook enjoyed a relatively trouble-free run to clinch his second podium of the day in third while championship leader Hill produced a valiant drive to claim fourth ahead of Dan Cammish.
Cammish came home in fifth after coming out on top of a captivating back-and-forth battle with Dan Zelos. Behind them Adam Morgan, Rob Huff, Árón Taylor-Smith and Sam Osborne completed the top ten positions.
Further down the order Mikey Doble did enough to provisionally secure the Jack Sears Trophy while Taylor-Smith’s 19th Independent win of the campaign ensured that Power Maxed Racing wrapped up the Independent Teams’ Championship for the first-ever time.
