Colin Turkington doubles up in second Oulton Park race
Colin Turkington drove a second perfect race at Oulton Park, heading home another West Surrey Racing one-two ahead of Rob Collard, with the heroic Rob Austin holding off a huge train of cars to take third.
Turkington and Collard both made great getaways to lead the Audi A4 of Austin, who jumped ahead of Gordon Shedden and Jason Plato off the line.
And the rear-wheel drive trio managed to maintain their positions, despite a safety car interruption on lap eight following an off for Dave Newsham on the Avenue, caused by contact with Jack Goff’s Vauxhall Insignia.
Third for Austin later became second, after the stewards ruled Collard had passed him under the safety car.
Triple Eight’s Plato harried Austin for the entire race but couldn’t find a chink in the Audi driver’s armour, with Honda Racing Team’s Shedden having a watching brief in fifth.
Mat Jackson marked Motorbase Performance’s 250th BTCC race with a final corner pass on Sam Tordoff to take sixth, while Triple Eight’s Tordoff had contact with Tom Ingram on the exit of the corner and fell to ninth.
Speedworks Motorsport’s Ingram was seventh ahead of Team BMR’s Aron Smith, who was drawn out of the hat for reverse grid pole. His team-mate Alain Menu completed the top 10 after an incident-packed race for the Swiss.
Menu was just ahead of an unhappy Andrew Jordan; the Eurotech Racing man confronting Menu in the pitlane at the end of the race, after an incident at Cascades on lap seven.
After the start, it was quickly clear that the BMWs had the legs on Austin, who at one stage had a train of 12 cars behind him, covered by just five seconds.
In that queue, Menu attempted a move on Motorbase Performance’s Fabrizio Giovanardi at Knickerbrook, spinning the Ford Focus around, before Jordan passed the Swiss into Old Hall on lap seven.
Jordan then had a huge slide at Cascades after contact from Menu, dropping behind Dave Newsham, who he passed into Old Hall on lap eight. Goff tried to follow through and made contact with Newsham, firing the AmD Tuning man into the barriers.
There was a flurry of incidents in the closing stages, with Nick Foster slowing on the Lakeside straight with an apparent technical problem, and Adam Morgan straight-lining Brittens and retiring in the pits. United Autosports’ Glynn Geddie also had an off exiting Lodge on the penultimate lap, while running in close company with Giovanardi and Lea Wood.
All of this went on well behind the serene Turkington, who drew away from Collard to extend his championship lead.
