Mike Bushell faces further scans on injuries after Thruxton
AmD Tuning’s Mike Bushell says he faces further scans to establish the severity of the injuries he sustained in his crash at Thruxton on Saturday.
It was initially thought Bushell had broken his left femur when he was taken to Southampton General Hospital, but it was later established that he had suffered severe ligament damage.
Doctors also think Bushell dislocated his hip in the incident with Speedworks Motorsport’s Simon Belcher, which happened in the early stages of qualifying.
Bushell, who is in the Thruxton paddock on crutches today, said he knew the injury was serious when he got out of the car and couldn’t straighten his leg.
Asked whether the injury was more or less serious than a break, Bushell told TouringCarTimes: “To be honest they reckon it’s much of a muchness really, it’s just as bad having torn ligaments and a dislocation as a break.
“I’m glad it’s not broken because I can get on, and I won’t need a cast. I’ve got to be a pegleg for a little while!
“I’ve got to go and see an orthopedic surgeon and have an MRI. They’re pretty convinced the hip popped out so there’s obviously going to be underlying damage to the tendons. I can really feel it in the small of my back and the front of my groin.”
Recalling the accident, Bushell added: “It was very high G, double figures I think. I knew it was a hard hit as straight away the pain in my leg. I couldn’t open the driver’s door so I climbed out of the passenger door and I had to sit down because the pain was so bad.”
AmD Tuning boss Shaun Hollamby has already praised the quick response of the marshals and medics in dealing with Bushell at the scene of the accident.
