Andreas Wernersson delighted to repay Brink team’s faith with points lead

Andreas Wernersson leaves Ring Knutstorp with the lead of the drivers’ standings, two points clear of Micke Kågered Racing’s Andreas Ahlberg in a successful weekend for Brink Motorsport, which also lead the teams’ standings.

Wernersson, who won just one race last year but his consistency kept him in the title hunt throughout with the fledgling Lestrup Racing Team, has joined Brink Motorsport in a third Audi RS 3 LMS this year, and paired up with outgoing champion Johan Kristoffersson’s race engineer, delivered a race victory in his first outing with the squad.

While the Audi driver had a quiet run to fifth in Race 1, in Race 2, he quickly jumped into the lead from second on the grid, and controlled the race throughout, despite pressure through much of the race from 2017 STCC drivers’ champion Robert Dahlgren.

“It feels great to win the race and with a new team,” said Wernersson. “They have high expectations of me, and it’s nice to live up to them in the first race.

“Over the weekend, we’ve had everything from snow, and rain, to sun – every condition. It’s been a very strange weekend. It was only in Free Practice 2 have we ever really run a dry set-up, and after that it’s ben rain tyres on drying tracks

“I kept pushing in Race 2, even when I saw Dahlgren overtake Hannes. I’d seen he’d already had a warning, and I thought maybe he’d get a time penalty, but I didn’t know, so I just tried to keep him behind me. I was quick at all the right places at the track – he was close sometimes, but I actually had pretty good control over the situation.

“To be leading the championship is good news. Our aim is for victory in the championship, so it’s good to be there at the start.”
