Hannes Morin broke Mattias Ekström’s 23-year-old record

Hannes Morin became the youngest ever STCC TCR Scandinavia winner in the third race of the weekend at Mantorp Park, beating Mattias Ekström’s record from 1997.

1999 STCC champion Ekström was 18 when he won his first race but was going to turn 19 later that year. Morin celebrated his 18th birthday earlier this year.

“I am incredibly proud to become the youngest ever STCC winner, a great feeling and a day that I won’t forget,” said Morin.

The Brink Motorsport driver had a turbulent Mantorp Park weekend, crashing in practice and qualifying but was able to secure the reversed grid pole position for the third and final race.

Morin kept the lead from lights to flag, crossing the line two seconds ahead of reigning STCC champion Robert Dahlgren.

“The weekend couldn’t have ended better than this, I am so happy with myself and the car,” said Morin.

“I was able to pull up a gap quickly at the beginning of the race. Then I saw that Dahlgren was doing everything to catch up with me, but I was able to control the gap. An incredible feeling.”

Morin heads the junior championship by 39 points over main rival Oliver Söderström ahead of the season finale this weekend.
