Oliver Söderström heads opening test at Knutstorp

Oliver Söderström posted the quickest time in the opening half hour test session ahead of the STCC TCR Scandinavia season finale at Knutstorp.

The Lestrup Racing Team waited until the final ten minutes of the session to post what would end up being the benchmark time, with a quickest lap of 1:01.242 at the wheel of his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.

However, a crash in the timing systems resulted in some laps being lost during the session, meaning that the end results from the opening track action of the weekend will need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Söderström’s quickest time enabled him to edge ahead of fellow Volkswagen driver Andreas Ahlberg, who had himself just moved to the head of the times ahead of the Cupra León Competición TCR of Robert Dahlgren.

Söderström’s time would prove to be unbeatable despite a number of drivers improving in the closing stages, most notably Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky who had been languishing outside the top ten before she jumped up into second in her Cupra on her final lap – albeit with a time almost three tenths of a second down on Söderström.

Albin Wärnelöv slotted into third in the sole Hyundai i30 N TCR on the grid ahead of Emil Persson and Ahlberg, with the top six rounded out by the Honda of Mattias Andersson.

Dahlgren – running with no compensation weight on the Cupra – would be the best placed of the top three in the championship in seventh spot ahead of Rob Huff, with the top ten rounded out by Kevin Engman’s Audi and the Cupra of Daniel Haglöf.

Both drivers are new additions to the grid for the season finale, with Engman called up to replace Magnus Gustavsen and Haglöf taking over from the unwell Poker Wallenberg.

Points leader Tobias Brink was shown as propping up the times with just two laps to his name in the session although he would have been inside the top six had his fastest time been recorded.

Brink Motorsport team-mate Hannes Morin suffered a technical issue on his Audi RS 3 LMS that limited his running.
