Mikel Azcona “taking it cool” for Race 1 at Barcelona

Mikel Azcona is taking a calm approach to Saturday’s Race 1 at Barcelona, where he could clinch the 2021 TCR Europe drivers’ title.

The Spaniard claimed the pole position for the race in a qualifying session where his main rival, PSS Racing Team’s Franco Girolami, did not set a lap time due to a technical issue, with the Argentinian starting both races from the back of the grid.

“I know that I just have to score points to win the title, so I will be taking it cool and not do anything crazy,” Azcona told TouringCarTimes.

“I would have to finish ninth or tenth and he would have to win, everything can happen and we have to be careful, but it’s looking good for us.”

Azcona has a crazy schedule this weekend, having claimed the WTCR pole position at Most yesterday and plans to head back to the Czech Republic tonight if he wraps up the TCR Europe title.

“If he was challenging me for the title, yes, I would definitely defend and race him,” added Azcona. “But my target is to score points, so I’m not going to risk anything.”
