Shaun Thong claims TCR Asia Challenge pole at Macau

Shaun Thong claimed pole position for the first TCR Asia Challenge race on the streets of Macau.

The Team TRC Honda driver lapped the legendary street circuit in 2:32.864 to beat Hyundai driver Lo Sze Ho by 0.146 seconds.

There was a massive gap down to third place, with Fancy Teamwork driver Yan Chuang 2.5 seconds from pole position.

Local driver Chan Weng Tong was fourth fastest, heading fellow Audi drivers Li Ka Hei and Hu Heng in positions five and six.

The Cupra duo of Cheong Chi On and Kelving Wong rounded off the top eight.

Front-runner Paul Poon (Audi) brought out the red flags in the Q1 session after hitting the wall with 17 minutes left, having set the fourth fastest time.

The Teamwork Motorsport driver made it to the Q2 session but was unable to take part in it due to the damage sustained from the accident and will start the first race from 12th place on the grid.

The first race of the weekend starts at 09:05 local time/02:05 CET on Sunday.
