Glock: “I want to prove I am different and will challenge for victories”

Timo Glock is aiming to be one of Formula 1’s more successful graduates to the DTM ahead of his debut with BMW MTEK at the Hockenheim season opener on May 5th.

Glock joined the newly formed MTEK outfit after parting ways with the Marussia F1 team early this year and believes he can be one of the few former Formula 1 drivers who can make an impression in the series.

“I am determined to learn everything I need in order to be successful,” said Glock to TouringCarTimes in its DTM season preview.

“I know Formula One drivers have rarely been able to make an impact, but I want to prove I am different and will at some point be challenging for victories – although that may not necessarily be in my first year,” he admitted.

Glock also feels the support given to him by BMW and MTEK has given him this confidence following his move to the series, despite the latter being formed from scratch in January this year.

“MTEK and I are both newcomers to the DTM, so when you consider that we pretty much started from scratch in January, it is amazing what we have achieved so far.

The atmosphere in the team is outstanding and I feel right at home in the car now.”

The veteran of 91 grand prix starts also commented that the introduction of DRS and option tyres which last an estimated five to seven laps are positive introductions to the DTM, as they will provide greater enjoyment for the driver and a better show for fans.

“I enjoyed the option tyre during testing,” he said after the final pre-season Hockenheim test in April.

“You can really push yourself to a limit with it on a flying lap. The fact that it is not particularly durable will add an additional tactical element to races, and will hopefully provide for a great number of overtaking manoeuvres.

“Even with DRS, it will not be easy to overtake, [but] when it comes down to it, we want to offer fans at the track and watching on TV the best possible race action.”
